Feminism--History--21st century ؛ Feminism--Social aspects ؛ Race--Social aspects ؛ SOCIAL SCIENCE / Feminism & Feminist Theory ؛ SOCIAL SCIENCE / Women's Studiesچکیده : "In this provocative book, esteemed scholar Barbara Tomlinson asserts that intersectionality--the idea that categories such as gender, race, and class create overlapping systemsof oppression--is consistently misinterpreted in feminist argument. Despite becoming a central theme in feminist scholarship and activism, Tomlinson believes dominant feminism has failed to fully understand the concept. Undermining Intersectionality reveals that this apparent paradox is the result of the disturbing racial politics underlying more than two decades of widely-cited critiques of intersectionality produced by prominent white feminist scholars who have been insufficiently attentive to racial dynamics. As such, feminist critiques of intersectionality repeatedly reinforce racial hierarchies, undermining academic feminism's supposed commitment to social justice. Tomlinson offers a persuasive analysis of the rhetorics and conventions of argument used in these critiques to demonstrate their systematic reliance on "powerblind" discursive practices. Undermining Intersectionality concludes by presenting suggestions about concrete steps feminist researchers, readers, authors, and editors can take to promote more productive and principled engagements with intersectional thinking"--
"This project examines the discursive practices of feminist critiques of intersectionality, arguing that they reinforce racial hierarchies, undermine feminism's stated commitments to social justice, and register a perception by white feminists that they have lost control of a certain kind of feminism that centers racially unmarked women"--لینک ثابت رکورد: ../opac/index.php?lvl=record_display&id=2913 زبان مدرک : English

Muslim women--Social conditions ؛ Sex role--Religious aspects ؛ SOCIAL SCIENCE / Feminism & Feminist Theory ؛ SOCIAL SCIENCE / Islamic Studies ؛ SOCIAL SCIENCE / Minority Studiesچکیده : "Following a long historical legacy, Muslim women's lives continue to be represented and circulate widely as a vehicle of intercultural understanding within a context of the "war on terror." Following Edward Said's thesis that these cultural forms reflect and participate in the power plays of empire, this volume examines the popular and widespread production and reception of Muslim women's lives and narratives in literature, poetry, cinema, television and popular culture within the politics of a post-9/11 world. This edited collection provides a timely exploration into the pedagogical and ethical possibilities opened up by transnational, feminist, and anti-colonial readings that can work against sensationalized and stereotypical representations of Muslim women. It addresses the gap in contemporary theoretical discourse amongst educators teaching literary and cultural texts by and about Muslim Women, and brings scholars from the fields of education, literary and cultural studies, and Muslim women's studies to examine the politics and ethics of transnational anti-colonial reading practices and pedagogy. The book features interviews with Muslim women artists and cultural producers who provide engaging reflections on the transformative role of the arts as a form of critical public pedagogy. How do religious women think about citizenship, and how do they practice citizenship in everyday life? How important is faith in their lives, and how is religion bound up with other identities such as gender and nationality? What are their views on 'gender equality', women's movements and feminism? The answers offered by this book are complex. Religion can be viewed as both a resource and a barrier to women's participation. The interviewed women talk about citizenship in terms of participation, belonging, love, care, tolerance and respect. Some seek gender equality within their religious communities, while others accept different roles and spaces for women. 'Natural' differences between women and men and their equal value are emphasized more than equal rights. Women's movements are viewed as having made positive contributions to women's status, but interviewees are also critical of claims related to abortion and divorce, and of feminism's allegedly selfish, unwomanly, anti-men and power-seeking stance. In the interviews, Christian privilege is largely invisible and silenced, while Muslim disadvantage is both visible and articulated. Line Nyhagen and Beatrice Halsaa unpack and make sense of these findings, discussing potential implications for the relationship between religion, gender and feminism"-- لینک ثابت رکورد: ../opac/index.php?lvl=record_display&id=2402 زبان مدرک : English

The standard account credits founders such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and Lucretia Mott with defining and then leading the campaign for women's suffrage. In her provocative new history, Lisa Tetrault demonstrates that Stanton, Anthony, and their peers gradually created and popularized this origins story during the second half of the nineteenth century in response to internal movement dynamics as well as the racial politics of memory after the Civil War"-- لینک ثابت رکورد: ../opac/index.php?lvl=record_display&id=2744 زبان مدرک : English

Feminism ؛ Popular culture ؛ Mass media ؛ Women--Social conditions--21st century ؛ SOCIAL SCIENCE / Feminism & Feminist Theory ؛ SOCIAL SCIENCE / Gender Studies ؛ SOCIAL SCIENCE / Media Studiesچکیده : "What does it mean to be a woman in the 21st century? The feminist movement has a long and rich history, but is its time now passed? This edited collection is driven by the question, why is feminism viewed by some (we would add a majority) as outdated, no longer necessary and having achieved its goals, and what role have the media played in this? Debates in media and cultural studies often focus on the politics of everyday life, tending to marginalise formal (or 'big P') politics (government and Parliament); whereas debates in political science tend to marginalise the everydayness of politics ('small p' politics). Aiming to bring these two strands together, this volume argues that 'politics' needs to be reinserted into debates around the nature of contemporary feminism, as well as restating that feminism is central to contemporary P/politics"-- مندرجات Machine generated contents note: -- Foreword; Liesbet Van Zoonen1.
