Corporate culture--History--United States ؛ Work environment--History--United States ؛ Capitalism--Social aspects--United States ؛ BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Labor ؛ SOCIAL SCIENCE / Gender Studiesچکیده : "Though best known for aircraft and aerospace technology, Boeing has invested significant time and money in the construction and promotion of its corporate culture. Boeing's leaders, in keeping with the standard of traditional American social norms, began to promote a workplace culture of a white, heterosexual family model in the 1930s in an attempt to provide a sense of stability for their labor force during a series of enormous political, social, and economic disruptions. For both managers and workers, the construction of a masculine culture solved problems that technological innovation and profit could not. For managers it offered a way to govern employees and check the power of unions. For male employees, it offered a sense of stability that higher wages and the uncertainties of the airline market could not. For scholar Polly Reed Myers, Boeing's corporate culture offers a case study for understanding how labor and the workplace have evolved over the course of the twentieth century and into the present day amid the rise of neoliberal capitalism, globalization, and women's rights. Capitalist Family Values places the stories of Boeing's women at the center of the company's history, illuminating the policy shifts and economic changes, global events and modern controversies that have defined policy and workplace culture at Boeing. Using archival documents that include company newspapers, interviews, and historic court cases, Capitalist Family Values illustrates the changing concepts of corporate culture and the rhetoric of a "workplace family" in connection with economic, political, and social changes, providing insight into the operations of one of America's most powerful and influential firms"--
"Analyzes the ways in which gender roles are institutionalized in Boeing's workplace culture, as well as the contributing policy shifts, economic changes, and social controversies present in American business culture"--لینک ثابت رکورد: ../opac/index.php?lvl=record_display&id=2470 زبان مدرک : English

On Gender, Labor, and Inequality presents four decades of Milkman's essential writings, tracing the parallel evolutions of her ideas and the field she helped define. Milkman's introduction frames a career-spanning scholarly project: her interrogation of historical and contemporary intersections of class and gender inequalities in the workplace, and the efforts to challenge those inequalities. Early chapters focus on her pioneering work on women's labor during the Great Depression and the World War II years. In the book's second half, Milkman turns to the past fifty years, a period that saw a dramatic decline in gender inequality even as growing class imbalances created greater-than-ever class disparity among women. She concludes with a previously unpublished essay comparing the impact of the Great Depression and the Great Recession on women workers"--
"This project will present a retrospective of the scholarship of the influential sociologist Ruth Milkman, a charismatic and dynamic speaker and teacher as well as author. From her early work on women's labor history, job segregation by sex during World War II, and reversal of women's work opportunities after the war through more recent work on the work challenges and organizing struggles of marginalized immigrant worker groups, Milkman has contributed significant perspectives to the study of work and unionism in the United States. This volume provides a foundation for anyone seeking to understand gender and labor issues in both historical and contemporary contexts. Milkman will provide a substantial introduction to the volume and frame the material by adding section introductions and headnotes. She will also update much of the material"--لینک ثابت رکورد: ../opac/index.php?lvl=record_display&id=2732 زبان مدرک : English

How do religious women think about citizenship, and how do they practice citizenship in everyday life? How important is faith in their lives, and how is religion bound up with other identities such as gender and nationality? What are their views on 'gender equality', women's movements and feminism? The answers offered by this book are complex. Religion can be viewed as both a resource and a barrier to women's participation. The interviewed women talk about citizenship in terms of participation, belonging, love, care, tolerance and respect. Some seek gender equality within their religious communities, while others accept different roles and spaces for women. 'Natural' differences between women and men and their equal value are emphasized more than equal rights. Women's movements are viewed as having made positive contributions to women's status, but interviewees are also critical of claims related to abortion and divorce, and of feminism's allegedly selfish, unwomanly, anti-men and power-seeking stance. In the interviews, Christian privilege is largely invisible and silenced, while Muslim disadvantage is both visible and articulated. Line Nyhagen and Beatrice Halsaa unpack and make sense of these findings, discussing potential implications for the relationship between religion, gender and feminism"-- لینک ثابت رکورد: ../opac/index.php?lvl=record_display&id=2402 زبان مدرک : English

Women--Political activity--United States ؛ Motherhood--Political aspects--United States ؛ Feminism--History--United States ؛ POLITICAL SCIENCE / Government / General ؛ SOCIAL SCIENCE / Gender Studiesچکیده : " From civically and politically engaged women linking their identity as "mothers" to their fight for prohibition, public sanitation, and protective labor laws to the general call to arms of "mama grizzlies" issued by Sarah Palin in 2010, American political activists and candidates have used motherhood to rally women's interest, support, and participation throughout American history. Politicized motherhood persists, and motherhood continues to inspire women's participation and direct their concerns. In The Political Consequences of Motherhood, Jill S. Greenlee investigates the complex relationship between motherhood and women's political attitudes. Combining a historical overview of the ways motherhood has been used for political purposes with recent political opinion surveys and individual-level analysis, she explains how and when motherhood shapes women's thoughts and preferences. Greenlee argues that two mechanisms account for the durability of motherhood politics. First, women experience attitudinal shifts when they become mothers. Second, "mother" is a broad-based identity, widely shared and ideologically unconstrained, that lends itself to appeals across the political spectrum to build support for candidates and policy issues"-- لینک ثابت رکورد: ../opac/index.php?lvl=record_display&id=2696 زبان مدرک : English

Feminism ؛ Popular culture ؛ Mass media ؛ Women--Social conditions--21st century ؛ SOCIAL SCIENCE / Feminism & Feminist Theory ؛ SOCIAL SCIENCE / Gender Studies ؛ SOCIAL SCIENCE / Media Studiesچکیده : "What does it mean to be a woman in the 21st century? The feminist movement has a long and rich history, but is its time now passed? This edited collection is driven by the question, why is feminism viewed by some (we would add a majority) as outdated, no longer necessary and having achieved its goals, and what role have the media played in this? Debates in media and cultural studies often focus on the politics of everyday life, tending to marginalise formal (or 'big P') politics (government and Parliament); whereas debates in political science tend to marginalise the everydayness of politics ('small p' politics). Aiming to bring these two strands together, this volume argues that 'politics' needs to be reinserted into debates around the nature of contemporary feminism, as well as restating that feminism is central to contemporary P/politics"-- مندرجات Machine generated contents note: -- Foreword; Liesbet Van Zoonen1.
